Sustainable Suzuki by Carol Tarr
Carol Tarr maintains an active cello studio in Lakewood, CO. She has taught Suzuki Cello Pedagogy at the University of Denver for the past twenty years. In addition she has been on the faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music, Beloit College, University of Northern Colorado, and Metropolitan State College. Many of Carol’s former students are teaching at notable music schools in the US and Canada.
Carol has spent a great deal of time furthering the Suzuki Cello Method, as a member of the SAA Board of Directors, Member of the SAA Cello Committee, Member of the SAA SPA committee, and as cello chairperson for the SAA Conference. She has taught students and teachers throughout the United States, Canada, Latin America, Mexico, Asia and Europe. Teaching is her passion.
Teaching “outside of the box” – tips to help students learn

You have a half hour to teach. You feel like you spend 20 minutes of it trying to elicit and manage attention, focus, following directions, social graces and stress in your students.
This workshop is for teachers who would like to learn some quick tips and tricks to help students with different learning needs in both individual and group contexts.
Take away an enhanced understanding of sensory processing and regulation and its link to social behaviour and effective strategies to promote being in the “green zone” to learn. Resource and reference lists will be provided.
Elizabeth J. Bell, is a registered occupational therapist and Director of kidsTHERAPY in Guelph. A graduate of Queen’s University, she has been practicing in pediatrics since 1991. Elizabeth’s keen interest to learn has led her to become an experienced practitioner in vestibular, auditory and visual interventions. She uses tools such as Therapeutic Listening and Astronaut Training and is certified in Sensory Integration and Praxis Testing. She continues to advance her clinical expertise in core and breath development, neurodevelopment, vision and reflex integration which has enabled her to develop unique programs such as bodySENSE, bodyGAMI and kidsWRITE. She also co-facilitates KidsPLAY, an Integrated Social Skills Group for school-age children.
Elizabeth strives to help children and families, providing a voice for the “misunderstood and hidden” challenges involved with sensory processing and regulation disorders. Her work also includes assisting children with a variety of mental health and developmental challenges.
Elizabeth is passionate about teaching others and has been an invited speaker at schools and community agencies in Ontario including the Suzuki String School of Guelph. Her clinic provides specialized groups and assessment teams, trains post-secondary students, parents and other disciplines. Elizabeth is also currently completing her Masters of Health Science in Bioethics at the University of Toronto.
Healthy Practices – Tips from the Musicians’ Clinic

Dr. McMillan will discuss his role as a doctor with the Musicians’ Clinic, and share his tips on how to stay injury free.
John McMillan, MD, CCFP, BSc, MMus, BMus, has been practicing medicine in Ontario since 2011. His initial post-secondary studies were in piano performance, in which he obtained Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of British Columbia. He then decided on a career change, and following a Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences at the University of Guelph, he completed medical school and family medicine residency at Queen’s University. Since 2011 he has held the position of Associate Physician at Musicians’ Clinics of Canada in Hamilton and Toronto, a one-of-a-kind clinical practice specializing in the health problems of performing artists, which has given him a unique opportunity to combine both of his major fields of study. Since 2014 he has been on faculty at the National Youth Orchestra of Canada’s summer training camp in an injury prevention role.

Violinist Debbie Hammond holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the University of Toronto, and a Master of Music in Performance from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her principal teachers have included Geri Arnold, Dr. Robert Skelton, Mark Fewer, Annalee Patipatanakoon, David Zafer and Yehonatan Berick.
Debbie has studied violin pedagogy with Robert Culver and Mimi Zweig. In addition, Debbie has completed Suzuki Violin trying for Book 1-10 and supplementary units with noted teacher trainers Edmund Sprunger, Alice Joy Lewis, Carol Dallinger and Terry Durbin. Debbie began her teaching career at the Suzuki String School of Guelph (2007-2010). After moving to Ottawa,
Debbie was a faculty member at the National Capital Suzuki School of Music (2010-2014). In 2014, Debbie established her studio, Hammond Suzuki Studio, as an independent Suzuki violin program, in the Bells Corners area of Ottawa.
The Big Bang: How SECE ignites a lifelong passion for the Suzuki Method

SECE (Suzuki Early Childhood Education) is the ultimate in pre-instrumental Suzuki parent education, turning the Suzuki Triangle on its head, and setting a blueprint for a future of Suzuki students who began their musical journey as babies or toddlers. Lenni Jabour (Little Music, Toronto), leads the discussion in this uplifting talk.
Lenni Jabour is a Suzuki Piano teacher (trainer: Gail Lange) and SECE teacher (trainers: Dorothy and Sharon Jones) in Toronto. Lenni was once a young Suzuki piano student herself, and also studied with Kelly Kirby and The Royal Conservatory. She has been a professional musician for 20 years, living in New York, Los Angeles and Paris recording and performing live before settling in Toronto to raise her young family. Lenni set up Little Music to teach piano out of her home studio in the Parkdale neighbourhood of Toronto, and her SECE classes at Artscape Youngplace and The Orchard Montessori School. She currently runs six weekly SECE classes in Toronto’s West end, a full after-school piano program, and is the mother of two young children. Lenni is on the Board of the SAO, and a tireless volunteer and advocate for children’s art programming in public schools.
