Piano clinics: a letter to piano teachers

A Day with Suzuki Pianists from Across the Province and Beyond!

On Saturday, November 2, 2019 we invite your students to Guelph to participate in this exciting student experience.  You may observe your students in several activities, led by outstanding Suzuki piano teachers.  

Which techniques will be explored in special “clinics” for your students?

Book 1 Crafting a RH Melody and LH Alberti Bass
Lightly Row (RH or HT); Long, Long Ago (RH or HT); Little Playmates (HT); Allegro (RH or HT)
As in every good restaurant, each piece may be accompanied by a side dish of ‘Twinkles’.

Book 2 Elegance and Rhythm: Minuets
Bach Minuet in G Major BWV 822 (Minuet 1); Minuet in G Major (Anonymous – Minuet 2); Bach Minuet in G Minor BWV 822; Petzold Minuet in G Major (Minuet 3)

Book 2/3 Classically Refined:  Sonatinas (no repeats)
Beethoven Sonatina in G (I — Moderato); Clementi Sonatina in C, Op. 36, No. 1 (I — Allegro); Kuhlau Sonatina in C, Op. 55, No. 1 (I — Allegro); Clementi Sonatina in C, Op. 36, No. 1 (I – Spiritoso)

Book 2/3 Colours in Sound:  Romantic Era
Cradle Song; Melody; The Wild Rider

Book 3+ The Soul of the Piano:  Pedalling
Little Waltz; Song of Twilight – a popular supplementary piece by Nakada for Book 3 Suzuki students; About Foreign Lands and People; Waltz in A Minor (no repeats)

Book 4+ Go for Baroque!  Keyboard Music in the Baroque Era
Bach Gavotte in G Minor BWV 822; Bach Minuet 1 from Partita in B flat BWV 825; Bach Invention No. 1 in C BWV 772; Daquin Le coucou; Bach Invention No. 8 in F BWV 779

Students should come prepared to perform and study one of the above pieces in the appropriate clinic, led by Silvija Abols and Maureen McReynolds.

Here’s what the day includes:

Early Book 1 students aged 3- 6:  Piano “Clinic”
Music and Movement
Parent Discussion/children’s movie/craft
Crafts available all day

Students aged 7 – 12:
Piano “Clinic”
Bal-a-Vis-X with Paul Hyman.  Fun!
Sonatina Jamboree*
Parent Discussion/children’s movie/craft
Crafts available all day

Students aged 13+:
Piano “Clinic”
Drama Improv
Sonatina Jamboree*
Parent Discussion/children’s movie

*What is a “Sonatina Jamboree”?
Accompanied by a string quartet, book 3 and up students will be able to perform one movement of one of the Sonatinas arranged by Joseph McSpadden, a popular feature of some summer institutes:

Sonatina, Op. 36., No. 1 by Clementi
Sonatina, Op. 55, No. 1 by Kuhlau
Sonatina, Op. 36, No. 3 – Spiritoso by Clementi
Sonata, Op. 49, No. 2 by Beethoven

Additional repertoire available for this Jamboree, accompanied by either a string trio or second piano:

Book 1 – all pieces 

Book 2 – Écossaise, A Short Story, The Happy Farmer, Minuet in G Major BWV 822 (Minuet 1), Minuet in G Minor BWV 822, Cradle Song, Arietta, Melody, Sonatina in G Major (Moderato), Sonatina in G Major (Romance)

Book 3 –Theme, The Wild Rider, Écossaise (Beethoven)

Book 4 – Mozart Rondo, Mozart Minuet 1 from 8 Minuets K 315, Arabesque, Musette in D Major BWV Anh. II 126, Gavotte in G Minor BWV 822

Book 5 – Fur Elise, Invention No. 1 in C Major BWV 772, Beethoven Sonatina in F Major (either mvt.)

Book 6 – Invention No. 8 in F Major BWV 779
