In Memoriam Daphne HughesJuly 19, 1936 – July 22, 2023 Daphne Hughes had a modesty and self-deprecating sense of humour that veiled her immense impact on music education and the lives of musicians young and old through the Suzuki method across Canada and the USA. Daphne was born in Toronto. She attended the University of Toronto and Bryn Mawr College where she received a Masters of Arts in English Literature. While doing doctoral studies in England she married William (Bill) Hughes in 1961. In 1965, they moved to Guelph, ON, where Bill took up a post as a philosophy professor

905 905 Area Report September 2023by George Cleland It’s an exciting time, reestablishing our student’s schedules, starting up both the teaching and the performances. Our students have participated in summer programs and festivals. It’s always nice to see new faces in our studios and reengage our regular students. In an interesting piece of news about myself, I have been selected as one of the finalists as a conductor for the Milton Philharmonic Orchestra. My concert is Thursday February 29, 2024 - Leap Year Day. What are the odds of that? I wish everyone a great new school year!

613 The National Capital Suzuki School of Music held a school year kickoff Picnic and Play-in in the Park on the 23rd of September - a chance for new and old families to reconnect and socialize before group classes begin in October. NCSSM is also looking forward to starting two new programs - an online Suzuki ECE program for the youngest and a Teen Mentorship program for the oldest. Hammond Suzuki Studio started the year off with a Play-in on September 16. We are welcoming six new violinists to the Twinkle class this year! Lots of smiles and snacks

416 Fond Farewell and New Beginnings at North York Suzuki School of Music by Elizabeth Sherk Elizabeth Sherk is glad that ten of her former students plus one of Maureen McReynolds', and her son Ted Sherk were able to come to her retirement recital and party on Sunday, June 18 at Lawrence Park Community Church. Since all these students left NYSSM they have each gone on to "find their own teacher" who, with mastery and skill, has helped each of them continue developing beautiful musicianship skills.
