In Memoriam

In Memoriam Daphne HughesJuly 19, 1936 – July 22, 2023 Daphne Hughes had a modesty and self-deprecating sense of humour that veiled her immense impact on music education and the lives of musicians young and old through the Suzuki method across Canada and the USA.  Daphne was born in Toronto. She attended the University of Toronto and Bryn Mawr College where she received a Masters of Arts in English Literature. While doing doctoral studies in England she married William (Bill) Hughes in 1961. In 1965, they moved to Guelph, ON, where Bill took up a post as a philosophy professor

September 2023 – Area Reports – 905

905 905 Area Report September 2023by George Cleland  It’s an exciting time, reestablishing our student’s schedules, starting up both the teaching and the performances. Our students have participated in summer programs and festivals. It’s always nice to see new faces in our studios and reengage our regular students.   In an interesting piece of news about myself, I have been selected as one of the finalists as a conductor for the Milton Philharmonic Orchestra. My concert is Thursday February 29, 2024 -  Leap Year Day. What are the odds of that?  I wish everyone a great new school year!

September 2023 – Area Reports – 416

416   Fond Farewell and New Beginnings at North York Suzuki School of Music    by Elizabeth Sherk   Elizabeth Sherk is glad that ten of her former students plus one of Maureen McReynolds', and her son Ted Sherk were able to come to her retirement recital and party on Sunday, June 18 at Lawrence Park Community Church.  Since all these students left NYSSM they have each gone on to "find their own teacher" who, with mastery and skill, has helped each of them continue  developing  beautiful musicianship skills. Thanks to Gabriela, Ivy, Evan, Ethan, Caitlin, Kevin, Tyson, Jeremy,

Summer 2023 – Area Reports

416 Jennifer Martyn - 416 Area Representative The North York Suzuki School of Music has had a busy spring with many fun and inspiring events for our students. In addition to our traditional year-end concerts, piano students participated in a ukulele workshop with teachers from the Doane Music School, and string students enjoyed an improvisation workshop led by our own Elena Spanu and Jeanine Noyes. Many of our students also performed solos and chamber music in a fair at Denlow Public School, where they were able to share their music with children and their families from the community.
