Fond Farewell and New Beginnings at North York Suzuki School of Music
by Elizabeth Sherk
Elizabeth Sherk is glad that ten of her former students plus one of Maureen McReynolds’, and her son Ted Sherk were able to come to her retirement recital and party on Sunday, June 18 at Lawrence Park Community Church. Since all these students left NYSSM they have each gone on to “find their own teacher” who, with mastery and skill, has helped each of them continue developing beautiful musicianship skills. Thanks to Gabriela, Ivy, Evan, Ethan, Caitlin, Kevin, Tyson, Jeremy, Tamara, Hannah, and Chloe. Ted opened the recital with a piece of his own composing, “Gloria in C Major”, and Elizabeth closed with a performance of a George Shearing jazz piece, “I’m in the mood for love.”
This video clip attached is the last phrase of that piece… It feels fitting for a retirement.
NYSSM teachers have done a lot of scouting this spring and found a wonderful teacher to replace Elizabeth, Katie MA WAI SUM, recently come from Hong Kong to Toronto bringing with her twenty years of experience of teaching piano, choir and chamber music. We look forward to many more students from NYSSM learning under her guidance to be comfortable performing musicians for their own and other’s pleasure.
